“DrSteve” as he is commonly known, is one of three founders
of California Together, and serves as our President/CEO and Editor.
He is a graduate of Harvard College (AB ’73) where he concentrated
in English Literature and pre-med studies. He went on to graduate
from the University of Minnesota Medical School (MD ’76) where
he excelled academically and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha
Honor Medical Society in his Junior year. He is board-certified in
Emergency Medicine with over 20 years logged as a practicing Emergency
Physician, including over 14 of those years served as Director of
Emergency Services at Anaheim Memorial Medical Center in Anaheim,
CA.
Most importantly, Dr. Groth brings to California Together a perspective
of recovery, as he will soon be entering his fourth year of recovery
from addiction to opiates, alcohol, benzodiazepines, and “other
things”. His personal story includes the dual diagnosis of chronic
pain due to chronic pancreatitis, an ongoing condition he’s
had since about 1998. This unfortunate combination greatly fueled
his own addictions for many miserable years before he finally “got
it” and found his own durable recovery. In his “spare
time” and in addition to his role here at California Together,
Dr Groth practices addiction and general medicine as the Executive
Director of Operations and Medical Director of the TRIAD Treatment
Center in Irvine, CA. In reality, this is his major professional focus
and takes up much of his time.
DrSteve will also be penning a regular California Together column
each month, “Straight Talk from the Doc”. Readers are
welcome to send their questions to him about medical issues in detox,
rehab, and in recovery, or to suggest topics for him to address in
his column.
